Zelfportretten 208, 211, 214, 215, 216 (Self portraits 208, 211, 214, 215, 216)

Meanwhile…

The making of self portraits continues. I’m feeling like an actor playing a role in a self chosen film still.

The atmosphere of the environment often determines the content.

Take for instance the last photo of the row. I made it last night when I was returning from a very inspiring gathering with my class. Still the atmosphere in the deserted subway carriage felt very forlorn. Bluesy, and I had a blues record on my MP3 device. So that determined the outlook of the photograph.

But at the inside I felt very much okay. So often a photograph is not telling the truth! But I assume you already knew that.

Het land langs # 16 (Along the Country Side # 16)

Sometimes it doesn’t need much to make a photograph: Some clouds in the sky, some sunlight, a bit of green land..

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (124) Because of a Fragmentic Nature (124)

It’s something I’m doing for a long time: To investigate the power of the minimal in the  photographic images. In other words: How much does a photographer need to capture to tell a coherent story.

Note that there is over 25 years between the two pictures.

Door het Oog van de Nacht. (Through the Eye of the Night)

There's something strange about spots in the night. Everything that looks normal in daylight often becomes frightening, mysterious or magical in the dark.
Essentially the night is just a big black box in which all kinds of things exist. Things which are natural as well as things which are made by mankind . Sometimes these things become visible, mostly by artificial light. A feeling of disorientation arises. One knows there's something out there, but it stays invisible. What's waiting in the dark? In my pictures this atmosphere is captured. There's also a distance from everyday life, calmness and concentration; moods which are often to be felt at night.
From april 2013 till march 2014 I am going to exhibit a selection of Night Photographs in the exhibition spaces of the Amsterdam Hogeschool. A hogeschool is a kind of university.
Fervent followers of my blog may have seen these photos in the series Night & Silence.
